In amateur radio you don't have to have the biggest baddest radio on the block. On the other hand if your budget can afford an expensive ham radio I say go for it. That is essentially what I did starting out. I knew I wanted a radio that would cover all the ham bands, so I bought a kenwood ts-2000 and I love it.
